In 2018, following the rapid decline of the Oregon silverspot butterfly in Del Norte County, Sequoia Park Zoo partnered with the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service to develop a program to raise butterflies that will augment the wild population while habitat is being restored. This talk will describe the challenges and triumphs of our pilot year, as well as the Zoo’s expanding contributions to Speyeria butterfly conservation and opportunities to help in the effort to save these pollinators and their habitats.
Chris Damiani serves on Sequoia Park Zoo’s Conservation Advisory Committee and is the lead for their butterfly conservation program. She received her B.S. in Biological Sciences from U.C. Davis and her Ph.D. in Zoology from Duke University. Chris has previously worked for the U.S. Forest Service Redwood Sciences Lab and the Institute for Wildlife Studies. Over the past decade, Chris has participated in several aspects of Oregon silverspot butterfly conservation, including research on the butterfly’s habitat requirements, surveys to monitor population trends, and habitat restoration. She now hopes to assist the recovery of Oregon and Behren’s silverspots through captive propagation.
