EUREKA, CA – The Sequoia Park Zoo Conservation Lecture Series is going VIRTUAL for 2021/22 and the first virtual lecture is scheduled for Wednesday, November 17, 2021 at 6:45 PM. Alicia Hamann will be joining us from Friends of the Eel River to discuss Returning Eel River Salmon and Steelhead to the Headwaters. Zoo updates and information will begin at 6:45 PM with the lecture starting at 7:00 PM promptly. Attendees can ask questions to the speaker at the end of the presentation via the chat box on Zoom. Logging in through a free, registered Zoom account is required, or attendees can watch live on the Sequoia Park Zoo’s Facebook page. Eel River salmon and steelhead have been blocked from accessing 280 miles of prime spawning habitat in the headwaters of the Eel River for a century. We now have the opportunity to correct this imbalance in the ecosystem and remove the barriers at the PG&E-owned Potter Valley Project. Friends of the Eel River’s Executive Director will discuss the many reasons why dam removal on the Eel River is inevitable and the incredible potential it presents for salmonid recovery, as well as the process to secure this victory for our watershed. Tune in to learn about the iconic species of the Eel River, why there is reason to be hopeful about their future, and how you can be involved.

Alicia Hamann
Alicia Hamann has worked for Friends of the Eel River since 2013, serving as their Executive Director since 2019. She grew up in southwest Washington where she fostered a deep appreciation for mountains, rivers, and forests, before coming to Humboldt County in 2006 to attend Humboldt State University. Alicia earned her bachelor’s degree in Anthropology with a minor in Business Administration and has spent her time in Humboldt learning about deep ecology, community organizing, and leadership. She is a graduate of the Cascadia Center for Leadership and is currently pursuing a PR Strategy Certificate through Cornell University. One thing that Alicia loves about this community is all of the grassroots movements and support for local programs; she is proud to have served as a board member for several organizations including SCRAP Humboldt, the Northcoast Environmental Center, Big Brothers Big Sisters, and the North Country Fair.
