The Sequoia Park Zoo Conservation Lecture Series continues on Wednesday, December 14, 2022 at 7:00 PM as a hybrid event, offered both in-person and on Zoom. Christian Brown will discuss the mysterious lives of wandering salamanders that reside high in the crowns of local redwood trees in his talk entitled, “Adapting to Life in the Trees: How Lungless Salamanders Jump, Glide, and Generate Lift.” The event begins with a Zoo update slideshow at 6:45 PM. The lecture starts promptly at 7:00 PM. Attendees are encouraged to ask the speaker questions after the presentation. The Conservation Lecture Series is sponsored by Papa & Barkley.
Christian began his career as a scientist, educator, and activist at Murray State University, where he earned a bachelor’s degree in Wildlife & Conservation Biology. From there, he earned a master’s degree in Biology at Humboldt State University (now Cal Poly Humboldt). Christian is currently a PhD candidate in the Integrative Biology Department at the University of South Florida (Tampa). His research examines the life history of amphibians with the goal of increasing awareness about their conservation needs. Additionally, Christian has mentored STEM students as an outreach instructor with the Museum of Science and Industry (Tampa), and he spearheaded the recent fight to save the University of South Florida (USF) Forest Preserve from development. He is also a wildlife biologist for international documentaries, mostly filming salamanders in the redwoods.
The 2022-2023 Conservation Lecture Series will be held in-person and remotely through Zoom. The in-person lecture is located at the Sequoia Park Zoo’s Flamingo Room at 3414 W Street in Eureka, CA. Attendees can enter the Zoo through Gate C, located to the left of the main gate at the W Street crosswalk. To attend virtually, a free, registered Zoom account is required. The Zoom link will be available on the Zoo’s website at SequoiaParkZoo.net and through the Zoo’s social media.
