March Conservation Lecture

EUREKA, CA – The Sequoia Park Zoo Conservation Lecture Series continues on Tuesday, March 6, 2018 with Dr. Fred Allendorf, presenting “Zen and Deep Evolution: When Did Your Life Begin?”  The Buddha taught that everything is connected (emptiness) and constantly changing (impermanence). Charles Darwin proposed a mechanism (natural selection) to explain how the diversity of life that we see around us today developed from a singular beginning. Dr. Fred Allendorf, one of the founders of the field of conservation genetics, will combine these revolutionary insights on a journey to the beginning of our lives. He will also show that we perceive the world around us through a lens which has been molded by evolution. Join us for a reception to meet the speaker at 6:30 PM in the Zoo’s Secrets of the Forest Building. The lecture follows at 7:00 PM in the Flamingo Room.

Dr. Fred Allendorf is a Regents Professor Emeritus of Biology at the University of Montana, USA. He received his Ph.D. in Fisheries and Genetics from the University of Washington in 1975. He was a postdoctoral scholar at the University of Aarhus in Denmark and Nottingham University in England. He has been a Fulbright Scholar at Victoria University of Wellington in New Zealand and at the University of Western Australia. He was elected a Fellow of the American Association for the Advancement of Science 1987, and he was elected President of the American Genetic Association in 1997. He received the American Fisheries Society’s Award of Excellence in 2011, and received the Molecular Ecology Prize from the journal Molecular Ecology in 2015. The second edition of his co-authored book Conservation and the Genetics of Populations was published in 2013. His overarching research philosophy has been that the most exciting basic research questions in genetics are also those that have valuable practical applications in conservation.
