Zoo Conservation Lecture: Condors 1/18

The Sequoia Park Zoo Conservation Lecture Series continues on Wednesday, January 18, 2023 at 7:00 PM as a hybrid event, offered both in-person and on Zoom. Chris West, Manager of the Northern California Condor Restoration Program, will discuss the conservation history of the endangered California condor and provide an update on the Yurok Tribe’s reintroduction of the condor to our region in his talk entitled, “California Condor Reintroduction Update.” The event begins with a Zoo update slideshow at 6:45 PM. The lecture starts promptly at 7:00 PM. Attendees are encouraged to ask the speaker questions after the presentation. The Conservation Lecture Series is sponsored by Papa & Barkley.

Chris began working with California condors as an intern with the Ventana Wildlife Society in 1999, leading to his master’s research at Humboldt State University investigating condor vigilance behavior while feeding. He began working for the Yurok Tribe in 2008, working to establish the first California condor reintroduction site in the Pacific Northwest and is now the Manager of the Northern California Condor Restoration Program. Chris earned his bachelor’s degree in Biology from the University of California at Santa Cruz and completed his master’s degree at Humboldt State University (now Cal Poly Humboldt) in Wildlife Management.

The 2022-2023 Conservation Lecture Series will be held in-person and remotely through Zoom. The in-person lecture is located at the Sequoia Park Zoo’s Flamingo Room at 3414 W Street in Eureka, CA. Attendees can enter the Zoo through Gate C, located to the left of the main gate at the W Street crosswalk. To attend virtually, a free, registered Zoom account is required.
